A new $330,000 internet-based program that includes an online pain management calculator will help improve cancer treatment in NSW and beyond.

The web-based resource - eviQ Cancer Treatments Online – has now been launched at Prince of Wales Hospital.

The resource includes the latest research and information from around the world about ways to manage different cancers plus a forum where clinicians can discuss and debate latest treatments.

And in a world first, the Cancer Institute NSW has developed an online pain management calculator that customises dosages for each patient to help ensure the safe delivery of opioid drugs such as morphine.

For patients, eviQ provides plain language, individual information so they and their careers can understand and feel in control of their cancer treatment.

For clinicians, cancer nurses and GPs, eviQ provides the latest evidence about very complex cancer treatments and it assists health professionals to administer care in a safe, effective and personalised way.

The new pain management calculator will complement the chemotherapy and radiation dosage treatment calculators that are already in use, helping ensure the safe delivery of cancer treatments.

With close to 1000 evidence-based protocols of cancer treatments, eviQ will change the way patients are treated by providing global safety alerts within an hour of their release and updates to international evidence-based treatments within 24 hours.

This is a NSW invention which harnesses the knowledge of clinical cancer experts across Australia ensuring the latest treatment information is available no matter where the treatment is taking place.

The brain-child of leading medical oncologist and cancer researcher Professor Robyn Ward, eviQ will be used in every cancer treatment facility in NSW and in hospitals throughout Australia.
